Pool & Outdoor Tiling

Outdoor & Pool Tiling Built for Cape Town's Climate

Cape Town’s outdoor spaces are an extension of the home the patio, pool deck, braai area, and garden paths are where life happens during our long, glorious summers. The tiles you choose for these spaces need to handle intense UV exposure, salt air, pool chemicals, heat, rain, and the heavy foot traffic of outdoor entertaining.

Truline Tiling has years of experience specifying and laying tiles for Cape Town’s unique outdoor conditions. We understand the Western Cape’s climate and select tile types, adhesives, grouts, and waterproofing systems that perform beautifully in the Western Cape environment for decades.

Swimming Pool Tiling

Pool tiling is one of the most technically demanding tiling specialisations. The combination of constant water immersion, pool chemicals, and thermal movement puts enormous stress on tiles, adhesive, and grout. We use only pool rated materials throughout.

Patio & Entertainment Area Tiling

Your patio is an investment that should look beautiful for decades. We use high quality exterior rated porcelain or natural stone tiles, laid on properly prepared substrates with movement accommodating adhesive systems and exterior grade grout.

Driveway & Path Tiling

We tile driveways, entrance paths, and garden walkways with heavy duty porcelain or natural stone rated for vehicular traffic where required. Proper bedding in full mortar, correct drainage planning, and expansion joints are essential for long term performance.

  • Vehicular rated tiles for driveways (if applicable)
  • Natural stone stepping paths with mortar or adhesive bedding
  • Cobblestone and brick look porcelain for traditional aesthetics
  • Entrance feature tiles and decorative paving patterns

Pool Surround & Deck Tiling

The pool deck takes a specific kind of punishment bare, wet feet, pool water, sunscreen, and constant thermal cycling from scorching summer days. We specify tiles with an R11 minimum slip resistance rating, choose materials that stay cool underfoot in direct sunlight where possible, and ensure the deck has correct falls to channel water back to the pool or to drainage.

Braai & Outdoor Kitchen Tiling

Outdoor braai areas and kitchen zones need tiles that handle heat, grease, and outdoor exposure simultaneously. We use high-temperature resistant tile adhesive in braai pit surrounds and specify tiles with the appropriate heat and stain ratings for outdoor cooking environments.

Balcony Tiling

Balconies require careful waterproofing before tiling a leaking balcony can cause major structural damage. We waterproof all balcony substrates to SANS standards, ensure correct falls to drainage, and tile with exterior rated materials that can handle Cape Town’s rain and wind.

Outdoor & Pool Tiling Questions

Frequently asked questions
What tiles are best for a Cape Town pool deck?

Travertine remains the most popular choice it’s beautiful and stays relatively cool underfoot. Exterior porcelain with a textured finish is practical and very durable. Slate and brushed granite are excellent for a more contemporary look. All must have a minimum R11 slip resistance rating for wet areas.

Draining, cleaning, and waterproofing takes 3–5 days. Tiling a standard pool (25–50m²) typically takes a further 3–5 days. The pool can usually be refilled 7–10 days after grouting is complete. Total project duration is typically 2–3 weeks from start to refilling.

Natural stone and cementitious grout both benefit from sealing in outdoor environments. Porcelain tiles generally don’t require sealing but the grout joints do. We provide sealing as part of our service and advise on maintenance intervals for each material type.

It depends on the cause of the cracking. If it’s surface level screed cracking without structural movement, we can remediate and tile over. If the substrate is moving due to soil settlement or inadequate construction, we need to address that first. We’ll assess during the site visit and be honest about what the best approach is.
