Professional Floor Tiling in Cape Town
Floor tiles are the foundation of any interior space they set the tone, define the flow, and take more punishment than any other surface in your home or commercial property. Getting the substrate preparation, adhesive selection, and laying technique right is the difference between a floor that lasts a lifetime and one that fails within years.
Truline Tiling has been laying floors across Cape Town and the Western Cape for 15+ years. We work with every tile type and every substrate — concrete slabs, timber floors, existing tiles, screed, and more — and we deliver floors that are perfectly level, beautifully laid, and built to last.
Substrate Preparation: The Foundation of Every Great Floor
The most important part of any floor tiling project is what happens before the first tile is laid. A perfectly prepared substrate is the foundation of a floor that doesn’t crack, hollow out, or pop tiles years later.
- Full substrate assessment concrete, screed, timber, existing tiles
- Moisture barrier application where required
- Self levelling compound to correct dips and high spots
- Expansion joint planning to accommodate structural movement
- Professional priming for optimal adhesive bond
- Damp proofing for ground-floor and below grade installations
Residential Floor Tiling
We tile every room and every level of residential properties: entrance halls, open plan living areas, kitchens, bedrooms, passage ways, staircases, and outdoor areas. We advise on the right tile for each zone based on traffic levels, sun exposure, underfloor heating compatibility, and your aesthetic goals.
- Large format porcelain (600×600 up to 1200×2400mm)
- Natural stone marble, travertine, limestone, slate, quartzite
- Terracotta and terracotta look tiles for warm, characterful spaces
- Encaustic cement tiles for pattern and personality
- Micro cement and concrete look porcelain
- Mosaic floors for feature rooms and bathrooms
Commercial Floor Tiling
Commercial floors require specialist specification. Foot traffic volumes, wheeled trolleys, chemical exposure, and safety requirements (slip resistance ratings) all need to be factored into tile selection. We provide R-rated slip-resistant tiles where required by SANS regulations and work with property managers, developers, and contractors on commercial floor tiling projects of any scale.
Underfloor Heating Compatibility
Tiling over underfloor heating systems requires specific adhesive and grout formulations to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction cycles. We have extensive experience with electric mat systems and hydronic in screed systems, and we use uncoupling membranes (such as Schlüter DITRA) where recommended by the UFH manufacturer.
Pattern Laying & Feature Floors
A floor is more than just a surface it’s an opportunity. We specialise in complex pattern laying that elevates a floor from functional to extraordinary:
- Herringbone — classic, directional, and always impressive
- Chevron — similar to herringbone but with angled tile ends for perfect V-joints
- Basketweave — traditional and geometric
- Versailles / French pattern — for natural stone installation
- Diagonal laying — makes spaces feel larger
- Brick bond / Running bond — timeless and versatile
- Compass rose and custom centrepiece patterns
Large Format Tile Specialists
Large format tiles (anything above 600mm in either dimension) require specialist installation techniques. We use professional lippage control clip systems and are skilled in working with ultra-thin porcelain slabs (3–6mm) that require special handling and adhesive. If you want that seamless, minimal grout line look, we’re the team to call.

Floor Tiling Questions Answered
How much does floor tiling cost in Cape Town?
Standard floor tiling labour starts from R150–R250/m². Large format tiles, pattern laying, or complex preparation work will be priced higher. We provide a detailed itemised quote after our site visit so you know exactly what you’re getting for your money.
Can tiles be laid over wooden floors?
Yes, but it requires careful assessment. Timber is flexible and moves seasonally, which can cause tiles and adhesive to fail. We use uncoupling membranes (like Schlüter DITRA) and appropriate flexible adhesive systems to accommodate timber movement. We’ll assess your floor during the site visit.
Do you always waterproof before tiling?
Yes, always. Waterproofing is mandatory before any tiling in wet areas. It’s not an optional extra it’s the foundation of a bathroom that won’t fail. We apply a two coat professional membrane, test it, and only tile once it’s fully cured.
How long before I can walk on newly tiled floors?
Do you remove old tiles before laying new ones?
Yes, tile removal and rubble disposal can be included in your quote. In some cases, tiling over existing tiles is viable but only if the existing tiles are sound, level, and the additional height won’t cause issues at door frames and transitions. We assess this during the site visit.
